HISTORY: wiki

Because the wiki doesn't go into her backstory: Prior to serving on the Canterbury, a young Naomi lived on Ceres station and was in a relationship with a man named Marco Inaros, with whom she had a son named Filip. Marco, however, was radicalized OPA (the Outer Planets Alliance, an unorganized group of Belters that resent the oppression of the Belt by the Inner Planets Earth and Mars). The OPA is highly controversial -- most will claim it's a sociopolitical group or labor union, but actions by radical members have branded it a terrorist organization. Marco definitely falls into the terrorist branch. After the forced shutdown of Terryon Lock, a free society for Belters, his faction wanted revenge. They took it by sabotaging the Augustin Gamarra, a transport ship leaving Ceres. There were no survivors, and after the OPA claimed responsibility for the attack it was revealed to Naomi that Marco was the mastermind behind it... and that she was an unwitting accomplice. A skilled engineer, she'd provided Marco with all the information and coding he needed to be able to destroy the ship so thoroughly there was nothing left to salvage. This knowledge in turn destroyed her. She felt responsible for killing everyone on that ship, and fell into a deep depression. Concerned she would confess, Marco manipulated Naomi into silence by keeping her from Filip, whom she loved dearly. Unable to cope with the the loss of both Belter lives and her only child, Naomi half-heartedly attempted suicide, only to realize she couldn't just roll over and die. But she couldn't remain on Ceres either, she had to get away from Marco. Although it meant losing her son for good, Naomi got a job as chief engineer on an ice hauler, the Canterbury, and began a new life as a long-haul freighter.

PERSONALITY:

- Naomi is a kind-hearted, empathetic person. She often says she imagines herself in the place of those who she sees suffering, and does whatever she can to help others and save lives. On Eros, despite the danger of bringing contaminated individuals onto the ship she tries to convince as many as she can to come along with the Roci crew trying to escape. In particular she's drawn to protecting the children, as she misses her own son. Tied to her desire to save lives whenever possible, she hates violence and refuses to carry or use a weapon, sometimes struggling quite a bit when (even when she will admit) that such tactics are necessary. This may lead some to believe that Naomi always needs to be protected, but she's often quite capable of handling dangerous situations herself, through communication or her own innovations. (e.g. Overriding elevator controls to smush an enemy coming up the shaft towards her party.)

She's intelligent, resourceful, and authoritative when she needs to be. When the Knight is damaged in the Canterbury's debris field, despite Holden being the one 'in charge' she is able to order her crew to strip down anything with a power source so they can send a distress signal, an act of ingenuity commented on by the Martians who rescue them. Though her usual crew is more like a family, she is used to being chief engineer and can give clear, concise orders to effectuate repairs or get others in line.

- Naomi is very private. Although she has become much more open with her crew it's typically expressing herself in the moment, in particular rarely talking about her past. (And she sometimes struggles to communicate adequately as a result of that -- if you don't know where someone's coming from, it's difficult to understand where they're going or why they feel or do a certain thing.) Although those experiences would provide them more context for her feelings and actions she keeps them to herself, more because she's uncomfortable revisiting tragedy than out of worries what they'd think of her. Although she has a strong sense of self and believes in her own convictions as right, she has a lot of guilt built up about her past.

- Naomi is also a determined, strong willed person with clear loyalties and priorities. Following her own moral compass comes first in all situations, even if the decisions she makes will cost her on a personal level. Most of her controversial and most difficult choices relate to her loyalty to the Belt, as Naomi is a Belter through and through. In one instance, she gives the Rocinante's protomolecule sample to Fred Johnson so the Belt would have their own, without discussing it with her crew first knowing they would disagree. She believed that the Belt needed it as well, to be able to have a place at the interplanetary table and not simply be crushed once again under the boot of the inners. This cost her the faith of her crew, and she left the Roci for a time, instead working on the Belt's first warship, the Behemoth.

In another instance, she is on a ship off of Ganymede, which has been partially destroyed and won't support life much longer. The owners of the ship are allowing her passage because she is making their repairs, but they can fit refugees... but only have enough air for about half of the people who are clamoring outside. No one else on the ship wants to open the doors, afraid they'll be swarmed, but Naomi goes outside, knocking Amos out with painkillers when he tries to stop her. She manages to get the children and youngest Belters aboard the ship and then offers her spot to the fellow who helped her with calming the riot and convincing the crowd to cooperate with the circumstance. He declines the spot, but Naomi was prepared to give up her life to save another she thought more worthy.

- At her canon point Naomi has returned to the Roci's crew, realizing that they're her family and her priority. Although she is a Belter through and through she's realized she doesn't belong on the Behemoth -- considered the Belt's first warship. There are nuances in the political landscape she's still struggling to understand but she needs to be with people she trusts, and people who will listen to her opinions on what she believes is right. If that's two Earthers and a Martian, so be it -- they're the people who have the best at heart for the system as a whole, not just one faction. 'The Belt must come first' isn't true for Naomi anymore (maybe hasn't been since she left the OPA) and she's got to be true to who she is in this moment.

Her relationships with her crew can be complicated and fraught, but she loves them above all else. She acts as a moral compass for Amos, which is why her seeming betrayal and lack of communication giving the protomolecule sample to the Belt was so difficult for him and strained their relationship. Naomi did something maybe wrong? How does he deal with this, without the proper context? With Holden, she admires him for always wanting to do what's objectively right to him, but they clash sometimes over what's possible or too dangerous to embark on. Together they temper each other, and as long as communication keeps up make an excellent team.

SPECIES: human
APPEARANCE: tall, thin, tattoos and curly hair
SKILLS: Naomi is an engineer with several advanced degrees and a highly innovative mind. She is able to actualize repairs many would consider impossible with the resources at hand. She's also capable of giving commands and making big decisions under high pressure based on what she believes is the right thing, pushing fear and personal impact aside.

NEW POWER: [ human compass ] - At its seed, Naomi will be able to think of a person or object she is familiar with and, if she's in the physical space it has been within the last 24 hours, see a "trail" leading towards where they are now. Leveling up this ability might make her able to track people and objects she's unfamiliar with, to trace their path through the city on a map rather than having to be in the same physical space, to see them in the moment like scrying, etc.
POWER REASONING: Naomi's personal journey throughout the story can be interpreted as a journey to find where she belongs and specific people she's missing (e.g. Holden, Drummer, and Filip at different points in the series) through sometimes massive expanses of space. She often acts as a moral compass for her crewmates as well, pointing the way towards doing what she believes is right, so acting as a literal compass seems to fit her personality.
